Fall can be a busy time – more events to attend, more outings to go to. So what’s the right fashion etiquette for the occasion?

Get together in the near future?

A re-union? Try something in a festive jewel tone and be sure to finish your look with some fabulous shoes and hand bag and don’t forget the jewelry. Add earrings and a necklace to finish your look.

A baptism – you’re the godmother? Try a soft flowing skirt and a cap sleeve blouse. Or how about a nice light shift topped with a print jacket. You’ll look stylish but you won’t be over done. Pay attention to the shoes on your feet – classy but comfort is important because you’ll be standing for a while. Add some light jewelry, a pair of baguette studs and a chain and you’ll be ready.

A date for high tea? Although the formality of white gloves is gone it is still important to dress nicely. Do not wear jeans or a sloppy shirt. If the high tea is an informal meeting then pants with a nice light jacket is fall colors is appropriate. If high tea is to honor someone then step it up a notch with a nice light skirt and top, or a nice light dress with jacket. It was only a few years ago when my teenage daughter returned from a trip to Vancouver with purple hair. I might add a beautiful shade of purple. Clean Your Jewelry Like A Pro

To keep your jewelry sparkling you’ve got to take care of it! Cleaning your jewelry is an important part of its care. No matter how careful you are with your jewelry daily life will take its toll on it – grime and dirt, hair spray residue, soap film – they all cause a residue to build up on your jewelry making it dull and unimpressive.

Cleaning your jewelry should be done with a little caution. Some stones such as turquoise, pearls, or opals, do not fair well with harsher cleaners. Use only warm soapy water and a Q-tip to gently clean these stones or gems. Rinse and polish. Toothpaste also works well. Place a small amount on a soft bristle brush, scrub, rinse well, then polish with a soft cloth.

Sterling silver jewelry is beautiful. However, overtime it will tarnish and not look so beautiful. It is important to clean your sterling jewelry regularly. There are many silver cleaner dips on the market which can be used for jewelry that has no stones or gems. However, I don’t recommend using silver cleaners on jewelry that has stones or gems set in it. In these cases I recommend using a Q-tip to apply the cleaner directly to the just the silver, then rinse completely and polish with a soft cloth. If you wish, you can use a blow dryer on the setting to make sure there is no water residue left.

Do not let your jewelry soak for long periods of time in cleaner. The moisture can damage some jewelry.
Moisture can damage a piece of jewelry over time, so if you do put your jewels into a wet jewelry solution, or rinse in water, make sure you dry it thoroughly. Use a soft towel to get the moisture out of all the cracks and crevices. You may want to use the blow dryer as mentioned above.

Fashion On The Beach

It’s that time of year when we pack up our bags and head to the beach for the day to enjoy those warm sunrays and the refreshing sound of the lapping water.

So what constitutes a good beach wardrobe. Well there are certain essentials that none of us forget. On goes the swimsuit and bathing suit cover, flip flops on our feet. Beach bag has been packed with the essentials – sunglasses, floppy hat, towel and a good book. Great – got the basics covered but what about the rest.

So if we are so prepared for a day at the beach, why is it by the time we get home we look pretty worn. Here are some helpful tips to make your day at the beach fun and keep you looking fashion fresh all day and all the way home.

First before you leave home, if you’ve got long hair pull it into a high pony tail or fun knot. Use some funky hair accessories that will stay in place when you’re swimming. Try a fun colored bobble or some firm fastening clips in bright summer colors. If you pull your hair up your neck will stay cool and you’ll look fresh all day with your neat hairdo.

Second slather yourself in sunscreen before leaving the house, then toss the sunscreen in your bag so you can reapply after a swim or every few hours. A sunburn is not only unhealthy and painful, it’s unattractive, so don’t let yourself turn into the lobster of the day. Your sunscreen should be a SPF of 15. It doesn’t hurt to use a strong SPF on your face or your entire body if you burn easily.

Your beach bag should be large enough to hold your supplies for the day. Why not get something fun and fashionable to keep you looking fashion fresh. Make sure you’ve got all the daily essentials in your bag – sunglasses, sunscreen, a good book, a floppy hat, some lip gloss, and any other makeup touch ups you’ll want. If you plan to wear eye makeup make sure it’s waterproof. Stay away from heavy foundations. If you must apply something use a bronzer moisturizer. It’s also a good idea to bring lip balm with an SPF15 to protect your lips. It never hurts to put some moisturizer in the bag. Include a snack and plenty of fluids. It’s important not to get dehydrated.

Okay great we’ve got the basics covered now what about the wardrobe basics? If you’re planning to wear a swimsuit it’s usually easiest to put it on at home, that way you’re not chasing down change rooms. So great – first on goes the swimsuit. Now what to wear for a cover? Well you’ve got plenty of choices. A tank top and shorts, tank and skort, or a nice light cotton dress all work well over top. Choose something that’s easy to put on and take off, and choose fabrics that breathe to keep you cool. I also suggest including a long sleeved cotton blouse just incase you start to burn you can protect your shoulders and arms.

If you’re planning on heading out later in the day without returning home you might want to toss a pair of jeans or long skirt into your bag. If your outing is going to extend into the evening you’ll want to include a sweater for the cooler evening air. If you’re worried about your evening wear getting sandy or wet at the beach, then place them in a separate bag and leave them in the trunk of your car. That way you are guaranteed they’ll remain fresh.

My favorite beach look is this. And what’s perfect is it keeps me looking fashion fresh throughout the day and takes me right into the evening. First I like a swimsuit that’s got lots of support and is bright and cheerful. I throw a fitted tank on top and throw on a loose flouncy long skirt. The long skirt serves me through the evening and also works great to cover up if I’m starting to burn. I choose a lightweight material in a darker color with a pattern that accents the colors in my swimsuit. Flip flops are my footwear. Depending on where I’m heading after the beach I choose either a basic pair or one of my funky pair with rhinestones or crystals. Easy to walk in, feet breath, and terrific for an evening out. I keep a fitted light weight sweater in my car, and take a long sleeved cotton blouse down to the beach. I usually choose a long sleeved and long length blouse because it’s versatile. I can knot it to create a short blouse, wear it long as a beach cover, and put it on if I start to burn on my upper body. I usually choose white or a soft pastel depending on my other colors. I like white because it’s cool to wear and refreshing to look at. Every year I buy a fun new beach tote that’s big enough for the beach but not too big as to take it with me for an evening out. I like a fun bag that’s full of character.

Since I always feel naked without my jewelry I wear fashion jewelry to the beach. That way should I loose something I won’t be out a lot of money and I won’t feel so bad. I like to keep the earrings simple and elegant. I may or may not wear a necklace. Often I’ll toss a funky wood necklace in the bag to add to the evening outfit. I like to wear a couple of fashion rings just to add the finishing touches. Now if you’re fussy about tan lines you’ll probably want to forgo the rings. I toss my watch in the bottom of my bag so I can put it on later.

That’s it – simple is the key. Keep your beach wardrobe choices simple but fashionable. Think ahead so you can go from beach to an evening out without hassle. Remember to always make your fashion statement!

The Uniqueness of Missoni

To Uniqueness of Angela Missoni stands her alone and away from any other designer. A garment designed by Angela easily is picked out of a line of impressive fashions.

Even though Angela Missoni had been involved in the family fashion business she was determined not to follow in the footsteps of her parent.

After having several career from managing a children’s playground to raising organic chickens, she was drawn back to her natural roots and began designing jewelry. Her father offered her a position in the company claiming that the diversity could keep her working in her own department out of the daily reaches of her parents.

Angela soon began designing fashion collections. Her collections were varied. One collection saw accessories added, another some knits, as she always battled to be unique and different.

One day her mother said she felt Angela’s lines should be what Missoni should be about.

Her desire is fueled by her uniqueness. She never wanted to be like any other designer. Angela prides herself in knowing that nothing else in the fashion world looks quite like a Missoni design.

Skin Care Tips For The Summer Sun

We should take good care of our skin all year round. Proper moisturizing and drinking plenty of fluids will help keep your skin healthy and young looking. Summer means we need to take a little extra care over our basic skin regime.

Today, it’s pretty hard not to be aware of the damage the sun can do to our skin. Turn on the TV or radio, pick up a magazine – there are warnings everywhere. Funny thing is some people still don’t believe how damaging the sun can be. You’ll hear people say things like “I don’t burn” or “I only burn one and then I tan” or “I don’t believe sunscreen is good for me with all those chemicals.”

We cannot stress enough how important it is to protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. That doesn’t mean you cannot still get that beautiful tan. It simply means you need to take some precautions so you won’t become a skin cancer statistic in the future. Also taking care will help keep your skin looking younger and healthier. UVA rays cause the skin to age, while UVB rays cause the skin to burn. You simply cannot overdo reminding someone to use sunscreen.

We recommend you apply foundation first thing in the morning before leaving your house. Ironic how us women are busy purchasing up all the anti aging products that hit the market trying to keep our skin looking youthful, yet we entirely ignore the damage that the sun can do. So while we are busy applying anti age creams and sirums, we rush outside into the sun without applying any protection from the sun once again damaging our skin. Rather a vicious circle. Okay enough – you get the picture I’m sure! So apply either a foundation with SPF15 first thing in the morning or apply your sunscreen and then your foundation.

So what does ultraviolet light do to the skin? UVA rays are the aging rays. They penetrate deep into the layers of the skin. It is believed they are responsible for premature aging and skin cancer. UVB rays are the rays that cause you to burn. They affect the out skin layers and cause sunburn, skin aging, and skin cancer.
There are many brands of sunscreen on the market ranging in SPF, some water proof, some are hypo allergenic, some rich in kinetin known for cell rejuvenation and its healing qualities. Clinical studies have actually shown kinetin to reverse and repair sun damaged skin. Choose a sunscreen that best meets your needs.

Great, now we’ve slathered sunblock all over our body like we’re suppose to. But there are other areas we need to protect that we often forget about. Our eyes are subject to burning to so be sure to wear sunglasses that have at least a 99% block against UV rays. This will protect your vision and save you from the dreaded crow’s feet. Wear a wide brimmed hat to protect your hair and further shade your eyes. You also need to protect your lips by using a lip gloss or balm that has at least a SPF15 rating.

It is also very important to drink lots of fluids. Stay away from caffeine based products and soda pop as they actually dehydrate the body. Drinking plenty of fluids hydrates the entire body so you don’t become a victim of heat stroke. Hydrating the skin also keeps it youthful and allows the body to flush toxins away much easier.

Summer is the fun season. Don’t hide inside fearful of the damaging rays. A little protection and common sense will keep you healthy and allow you to get out and enjoy the warm summer season. Have fun in the sun!

The History of Bracelets

Bracelet popularity dates back to the Roman times and continues today.
Roman bracelets shared many of the design patterns of necklaces and earrings from that era. The ever popular ball earrings from that era were nicely matched with a ball style bracelet. Engraved bangles and snake bracelets were very popular during Roman times. Bracelets made of twisted coil with lion head ends were common place, as were the two part bracelets ending with a pair of lion heads. The Heracles knot bracelet is recognized as a Roman era piece. The Roman’s were very creative in the designing of their jewelry. However they still borrowed from Greek motifs. Palmettos, fleeing dogs and acanthus leaves, all of Greek origin, were often seen in the designing of Roman jewelry.

Stones and glass were often used in Roman bracelets. . Gem stones were commonly found set in eyes. Open bands were cut to represent a row of ivy and entwined with pearls. Many of the leaf and berry bracelets were heavily adorned with decorative glass. The wealthier women could be seen wearing bracelets layered in bezel set emeralds.

During the Gerogiian times bracelets remained popular. Paris jewelers were known for their gold bracelets set with pearl edging. After the 1820s coral became the “in” fashion statement, so bracelets and other jewelry were heavily set with coral.

During the Gerogiian time it was very fashionable to wear many bracelets at once, including wide ribbon gold mesh bracelets, and silk ribbon bracelets. Gem and Diamond bracelets were designed in geometric patterns. Gold was heavily used during this era.

The Victorian era brought changes to the fashions of women, including jewelry styles. Earrings grew long and dangled, bracelets became rigid and were normally worn in pairs. The buckle bracelet became very fashionable.

The jewelry of the Victorian era expressed sentiment, and bracelets were no exception. Bracelets would contain lockets or charms with pictures or hair of a loved one, and engravings were common

Early Victorian jewelry enjoyed some mystic with hidden meanings being popular. The acrostic bracelets where the first letter of each gemstone spelled a word of friendship were very popular. For example a bracelet set with Lapis, Opal, Vermeil [hessonite garnet] and Emerald would spell Love.

The Art Nouveau period once again saw changes to fashion and jewelry. Chameleons and serpents entwined themselves around bracelets. The mystical Egyptian scarab was found on bracelets and rings. Other popular creatures included dragonflies, butterflies, bees, peacocks, swans, and even bats. This was a very figural period attached to nature.
If jewelry did not depict creatures it depicted flower blossoms or flower buds.

From 1910 to 1939 women’s fashions saw sleeveless or short sleeve dresses appear. The result was flexible bracelets and bangles worn on the upper arm. These arm bracelets were often adorned with gemstones or diamonds.
From 1940 to 1949 US designers were greatly influenced by the designs from the French house of Van Cleef & Arpels. Bracelets with ribbon of hexagon lines centered on fine gemstones fastened with heavy clasps became very vogue.

From 1950 to 1960 daytime saw simpler lines for not only gold bracelets but necklaces as well. Gold mesh or twisted wire bracelets were very popular.

From 1960 to 1970 bracelets became more flexible and were often set with gems. Bangles on the other hand became more rigid and were often seen set with random diamond placements.

From 1970 to 1979 bracelets were flexible and often set with tiny baguettes. Delicate and dainty bracelets were vogue.

From the 1980s to now bracelet fashions have been mixed and varied. Bracelet styles have become more of an individual fashion statement than a trend. Gold has always remained popular as have gems, however sterling silver has become very popular and recognized for its versatility and wearability at affordable pricing. In the last few years we’ve also seen an increase in demand for titanium bracelets.
Today a women’s fashion statement is about her! What she likes, what she feels good in. So your bracelet wardrobe can be what ever you want. Wear a dainty gem set gold bracelet or an armful of clunky bracelets, which is very vogue this season.

It’s a whole new day, and there is a whole new look for bridesmaids. It’s a welcome change from the past years. At it’s not just the bridesmaids look that has gotten a facelift, the brides are sporting a whole new look too.

Traditional wedding gowns and traditional white will always be a choice. That’s a tradition that’s just not going to disappear. And that’s okay. But the choices now available for the modern bride are welcome change, allowing those creative juices to flow, and one’s own personality to stand out.

The history of the bridesmaids attire is quite interesting. In past centuries brides wore elaborate colorful gowns, and bridesmaids wore similar gowns. This was to disguise the bride and protect her from being kidnapped by evil spirits. By the Victorian era things had changed producing brides that wanted to stand out in the crowd. Thus the formal elaborate white wedding gown entered the wedding fashion scene. However the bridesmaids attire didn’t change, remaining bold and frilly.

Well this century bridesmaids have a lot more to say about what they wear. Not only have the traditional dresses taken on a more sophisticated and elegant look. Many brides now let their bridesmaids choose their own dress based on the chosen color scheme. All bridesmaids weren’t created equal. By allowing them to choose a dress that flatters them, you have happier bridesmaids and better photo ops.

Gowns and dresses worn by the modern bridesmaid are often functional enough for other formal events and gatherings. A much smarter alternative to the expensive gown that’s worn once then buried deep in the closet never to be seen again. We all remember wearing one of those “awful” dresses at some point.

The more bridesmaids you have the more coordination and communication your going to have to take care of. Remember you’ll have plenty of issues to deal with from dresses, to nails, to hair, to jewelry. So don’t choose more bridesmaids than you think you can handle. This is supose to be a happy time for you and stress doesn’t make a person happy.

Forget the old theory that if you don’t include everyone that’s close to you, there will be hard feelings. Most women have outgrown this childish thought pattern, and recognize that the modern bride has tough choices to make to stay within budget and fulfill her special day. Sometimes a future bride just has too many close friends to have them all in the wedding party. Relax! Invite them to the wedding, and if you want ask them to do special favors such as perhaps your nails or your hair, depending on their own unique talents.

The maid of honor has a role to play besides in the wedding party. She needs to be the brides right arm and help with any wedding tasks she can. She can help select the wedding gown, get the invitations in order, arrange a wedding shower, help with choosing a reception location, help decorate, or even help prepare the food. The duties that can be assigned to your made of honor are endless, just be sure not to overwhelm her with too many requests. Your maid of honor is like the brides personal first aid kit. Ready to fix anything that’s broken.

Bridesmaids also play an important role by planning the bridal shower, preparing munchies, cake, or sandwiches for the shower. They are also there to support and help the bride whenever they can.

Your having a beach wedding so your reception's going to be more like a fun in the sun party. The right mix and you too can throw the perfect party! One part idea, one part planning, and one part cocktail mixers and you'll be well on the way to the perfect party!

Throw a martini party. Start by re-creating the perfect martini lounge. Ensure your DJ has the perfect mix of funk music and jazz music to set the tone. Dim the lights and change some of the lighting to amber. Arrange seating in cozy groups of 4-8 so your guests can easily interact with each other. Buy some funky martini glasses and shaker. Drop in flavoured nautical themed candy such as lifesavers, and use beach themed stir sticks like parasols.

If your looking more for an exotic island style party then decorate with seashells, sand dollars, star fish, and beach type flowers. If you can't go to the beach then bring some sand to your location. Make sure your DJ has a good mix of Jimmy Buffet tunes, reggae, and salsa music. Serve ceviche, bbq chicken and shrimp cocktails. Large banana leaves make great serving dishes. Mix up the margarta's, rim the glasses with lime dipped in course salt.

If your planning something just a little more classic you can still incorporate your beach theme. Seat people in small groups of 4 to 6. Place beach style matts in the center of each seating area and adorn with beach themed vases and flowers, sprinkle some shells and star fish and you'll bring the beach to your more classic get together. Make sure the DJ has plenty of Motown and disco music so your guests can groove. Serve mini cakes and cookies, chocolate favorites like brownies or fudge. A chocolate fondue is always a hit! Serve high balls or low balls with parasol swizzel sticks.

Let your imagination run wild. With a little creative planning you can make your guest feel like they've gone from the beach wedding to an exotic tropical resort. You need not spend a large amount of money if your resourceful and creative. Have fun planning and be assured your guests will be talking about the perfect party for months!

Kate and Laura Mulleavy Join The Designer Seen

If you’ve been following the fashion scene, by now you’ve most likely heard the names Kate and Laura Mulleavy. New to the fashion world and hitting it full force, these two young girls are an inspiration for others. Without formal training but armed with determination, charm, and great ideas you reach your dreams.

Sisters Kate and Laura Mulleavy new Rodarte line is full of nostalgia capturing the feel of the 1930s in America. It was only last year that sisters Kate and Laura decided to launch their own label Rodarte. They were determined to cut no corners using only the most expensive fabrics.

Rodarte is based on the strong American spirit. Fashion icons such as Carole Lombard were inspirational to their designs. The Rodarte line can be found at Mix in Houston and Kirna Zaberte in New York.
26 year old Kate and 24 year old Laura both graduated from Berkeley. Neither has any formal fashion training, only a passion for the history of the past. Both have always had an interest in designing clothing.
Rodarte is named after their Grandfather a Zacatecan coal miner who immigrated to America during the Mexican Revolution. The family’s linage is very important to both girls. They are also very close to each other which is why they make such a great team.

These inseparable sisters have been in business a very short period of time when they got a break. The Mulleavy sisters introduced their small collection of silk dresses adorned with peacock feathers and Italian-wool evening coats.

Their collections were as aesthetically pleasing as the works of famous designers such as Calvin Klein. They certainly were the most talked about.

Kate and Laura wrote a letter to vintage guru Cameron Silver charming him with their 10 piece Rodarte collection. He invited them to set up shop during L.A. Fashion Week at Decades.
Even without formal training, it is very apparent that this sister act has a sense of style and design as their small Rodarte collection quickly gains momentum. Their line will soon be found in some of the countries best boutiques. LA’s Satine, Houston’s Mix, Chicago’s Ikram, New York’s Kirna Zabette. They’ve even managed a private showing for Vogue’s Anna Wintour.

The collection ranges from $1300 to $2000 in price. It’s themed around the romantic west, nature, and their personal family linage. Their black wool crepe bodice dress is an all time favorite. Made from strips of stiff fabric resembling tree trunks, with a delicate flowing skirt. The Earhart coat is a one pocket trench coat, and their military coat is black double faced wool accented with a thin row of pheasant feathers. How much closer to nature can you get?

Their fast growing recognition has people wondering who they know. The reality is they haven’t made their debut because of who they know. Every day at Estate Jewelry International someone aasks that question. May people think estate means antique, however that's just not true. Very few pieces are truly antique. Antique is defined as being at least 100 years old. We do sell antique jewelry, however those pieces are much more rare in good condition and highly sought after by collectors.

What estate really means is that the jewelry was previously owned. Sometimes we are able to purchase a jewelry store close out of never worn pieces from previous eras, most times we aquire private collections of estate jewelry who no longer have a need for the jewelry because their tastes have changed. We also purchase private collections from customers who have inherited jewelry who either have no desire for any of the pieces, or have choosen a few sentimental pieces and are disposing of the balance .

Most people unfamiliar with our estate jewelry will find an enormous dichotomy in the selection. There are bygone designer pieces from the 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's in rhinestone jewelry as well as karat gold and sterling 20's pieces. There are pieces from the 70's, 80's, and 90's as well. The brilliance in a diamond is determined by the way the light reflects inside the diamond and is very dependent on the cut of the diamond. The better the cut the more fire & brilliance. Diamond brilliance is defined as the reflection of a bright white light from the facets of the diamond and is determined by the artistry of the cutting and polishing. Each facet must be cut and shaped with precision, and placed with perfect symmetry.
A well cut diamond is referred to as ideal, excellent, or very good. In a well cut diamond the light enters at the top and forms a U shape and then exits back out at the top. With a deep cut the light enters from the top and forms an L shape as it exits out the side. With a shallow cut diamond the light enters from the top and curves slightly back out at the bottom of the diamond. Too deep of cut or too shallow both interfere with the correct light reflection.
Of all the aspects that are important when purchasing a diamond, the brilliance is by far the most important as it is what gives your diamond life. You may have a diamond with superior coloring, or it may be a very large diamond but if it isn't cut for maximum brilliance then what you have is a dull lifeless stone.

Another Celebrity Singer Adds Clothing Designer to her Accomplishments - Reba McEntire

In todays world going from celebrity to clothing designer seems to be the norm and not the exception. Recently U2's Bono and wife joined the ranks of clothing designers. And now Reba McEntire, country singer and sitcom star, has come on board.
Reba is quite the lady, recently she was named she was named America's Mother of the Year by American Mothers Inc. Reba is a two time grammy award winner and music is still her number one priority. Reba is currently on tour with Brad Paisley and Terri Clark, and she is planning to release her greatest-hits collection in the fall.
Now if that's not enough, in March, McEntire partnered with Dillard's to launch a women's clothing collection. Reba believes if a women looks good, she'll feel good and her line of clothing is intended to do just that. Jewelry from 3000 BC Egypt to the 21st Century

Egypt
The use of gold jewelry can be dated back to Egypt 3000 BC. Gold was the preferred metal for jewelry making during ancient times. It was rare, it was easy to work with, and it never tarnished. Magnificent bracelets, pendants, necklaces, rings, armlets, earrings, collars, and head ornaments were all produced in ancient Egypt, the land of the Pharaohs. In 1922 Howard Carter’s excavations led to the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb and many gold artifacts, all showing the art work of ancient Egypt.

Greece
In ancient Greece, gold beads in the shape of shells, flowers and beetles were very common. In Northern Greece beautiful necklaces and earrings have been excavated from burial. By 300 BC the Greeks were using gems such as emeralds, garnets, amethysts and pearls. They also created colored glass stones and enamel stones. Carved agate cameos and gold filigree work were widely made.

Italy
The Italian Etruscans produced granulated textured gold work. They made very large, necklaces, bracelets and earrings. They were also known for producing hollow gold pendants that were filled with perfume. Even today the Italians are still known for the quality gold jewelry.

Rome
The Romans used 18 and 24 carat gold for their coins. Coinage gold was readily available so it was popular with craftsmen for decorative jewelry. Over 2000 years ago the Romans were using sapphires, emeralds, garnets, and amber in their jewelry.

Europe
During the 13th century the Medieval Sumptuary Laws were enacted which put a cap on luxurious jewelry and clothing. The town folk of France, banned from wearing girdles made from pearls or any other gemstone. They were also banged from wearing gold or silver. Similar laws existed in England banning artisans from wearing gold and silver. These laws show how fine jewelry had spread beyond nobility to the town folk.

Real and Fake Gems and Pearls
For as long as mankind has existed gems and jewels have been used as token of ones love for another. While many pieces of jewelry existed adorned with fine gems and made from precious metals, there was also some very good fake jewelry. True gemstones and pearls originated in the east and they were bought mainly by the Italians. The Italian merchants then sold the jewelry to the Europeans. High quality glass imitations were often used and sold with the intent to deceive. These high quality glass stones were often used in the Royal funeral robes and in children's jewelry.

Valued more than gemstones, were the flawless, round, natural white pearls. South India provided some of the finest pearls. The Italians were able to make quality imitation glass gems and pearls that could only be identified by a gemologist. There is historical proof that recipes for false pearls existed as far back as 1300. White powdered glass was mixed with albumen and snail slime to produce imitation pearls.

Earrings and Dress Jewelry
During the 17th century woman always wore earrings, whether they were dressed or undressed. It was very acceptable to wear faux pearls and paste gem earrings during the day saving fine diamond jewelry and gem jewelry for evening attire. Dress ornamentation decreased in size. Sleeves or skirts were often decorated with matching brooches.

During the 16th it was very fashionable to wear large quantities of pearls. Both jewelry to clothing accessories were adorned with pearls. During the 17th century Jaquin of Paris patented a method of making fake pearls. Hollow blown glass balls were coated with varnish mixed with iridescent ground fish scales. The hollow balls were then filled with wax to strengthen them. This discovery made Paris the main producer of faux pearls for well over 200 years.

Paste is a compound of glass containing white lead oxide and potash. Paste jewelry was very common in the later part of the 17th century. The highest quality and most long lasting paste jewelry was produced after 1734 by Georges Strass. Paris lead the production of faux gems [paste] and faux pearls. Just about any kind of fake gem could be made, including fake opals.

After 1760 the production of fake jewelery spread to London and to Birmingham. During the industrial revolution steel was produced in large quantities so it was easily available. It was ues for setting marcasite and jasper ware cameos. Glass and Wedgwood porcelain paste cameos were made in English factories and were also very popular.

The fashion from this era also included ornate shoe buckles of paste, steel and tin, elaborate paste jewel buttons, as well as semi precious for day wear.

Empire Jewelry
In 1804 Napoleon emerged as Emperor of France, resulting in a revival of jewelry and fashion as a new court of pomp. 'Joailliers' worked fine jewelry and 'bijoutiers' used less precious materials.
The members of the new French imperial family had the former French royal family gems re-set into the latest neo-classical style. The new trends soon found their way to Europe, particularly England. The main influence for design was the Greek and Roman.

Parures and Cameos
Parures were a matching suite of coordinating precious gems which could include a necklace, a comb, a tiara, a diadem, a bandeau, a pair of bracelets, pins, rings, drop earrings or and cluster stud earrings and possibly a belt clasp. A full parure consisted of a minimum of four pieces. A demi parure consisted of three or less pieces. Both Josephine and Napoleon's second wife had magnificent parures.
Once Napoleon's cameo decorated coronation crown was seen, cameos became the rage. Cameos were carved from hard stone, conch shells and even from Wedgwood porcelain.

Victorian Jewelry
In 1837 when Queen Victoria came to the throne jewelry was romantic and nationalistic. It focused on European folk art, which later influenced the Arts and Crafts Movement. Until mid century most western jewelry came from Europe, with some jewelry being produced in North America and Australia.
Mass production of mid Victorian jewelry in Birmingham, Germany and Providence, Rhode Island resulted in lower jewelry standards. Victorian women rebelled when they saw some the poor quality of much of this machine made jewelry. Woman rebelled by wearing no jewelry at all, or buying from the emerging artist craftsman. Some jewelers like Tiffany recognized a niche market and began to make fine jewelry of a very high standard, opening shops in main European cities.

Mourning Jewelry
During the Victorian era mourning jewelry was very fashionable. The initial months of mourning were unadorned by jewelry of any kind. As the mourning rituals increased, mourning jewelry developed as a fashion item. Queen Victorian wore a great deal of jet mourning jewelry after Prince Albert’s death.
Jet from Whitby, North of England was set into mourning pieces. All types of material that were black were used and almost all included a lock of the dead loved one's hair. Hair was braided or twisted very tightly until it became hard and thread like.

Arts and Crafts Jewelry
During the 1870s the Arts and Crafts movement evolved as a reaction to mass produced shoddy goods and inferior machine made products which were a result of the industrial revolution. William Morris and John Ruskin were both leaders of the arts and crafts movement in England. They promoted simple Arts and Crafts of designs based on floral, primitive or Celtic forms worked as wallpapers, furniture and jewelry. The polished stones used in Arts and Crafts jewelry gave a medieval, simpler, gentler, tooled hand made look and feel to items.

Art Nouveau
The Art Nouveau followed the arts and crafts movement resulting in a new jewelry look. The movement began in Paris and its influence went throughout the Western world. Art nouveau jewelry had curves, sinuous organic lines of romantic and imaginary dreaminess. It was very ethereal turning into winged bird and flower forms. French, René Lalique was the master goldsmith of the era of Art Nouveau producing exquisite one off pieces. Today, the Art Nouveau style is still admired, sought after, and copied

Pearls
Various combinations of pearl necklaces come in and out of fashion with regularity so pearls too are a must. Today pearls are still a wardrobe essential. Both faux pearls and cultured pearls are very affordable today. Since the opening of trade with China in the 1990s, many pearls are imported from China dropping the price to about 1/3 of what it was prior to China entering the market. The Japanese have suffered disease in their pearl beds as well as facing competition and are finding it hard to compete with China's prices.
Pearl necklaces and pearl earrings can lift a complexion and bring light and radiance to the face taking years off a woman whatever her age. They have been a wardrobe staple for centuries, and a wedding attire tradition. Cultured pearls have become very affordable, and faux pearls are very cheap and the quality can be excellent. Currently Pearls are a very “hot” fashion statement and with the modern twist of being interspaced on gold wire or floating on special synthetic cord they are essential to the millennium look.

Cocktail Jewelry
During the 1920s Lalique mass produced and designed high quality glass jewelry. Fake, or costume jewellery was sometimes then called cocktail jewelry. Costume or Cocktail jewelry was greatly influenced by designers such as Coco Chanel, and Elsa Shiparelli as well as a host of other designers. These two designers were particularly known for encouraging clients to mix their fine jewelry and costume jewelry. Both designers offered imagination and fun and both often sported fabulous fakes.
In the late 1930s Napier of the USA was at the forefront of manufacturing fake cocktail jewelry offer glamour and escapism. Today, Napier still produces excellent contemporary costume pieces.

Hollywood Influence
By the 1940s and 1950s American culture was very dominant in Europe. The influence of movie films and the prominence of film stars set the fashion stage for womens make-up, hair and wardrobe. People wanted copies of outfits and jewelry worn by the actresses. Women believed that the glamour of Hollywood would rub off on them if they dressed and looked like the glamorous Hollywood actresses.
During the Second World War metals were rationed, halting the production of fine jewelry. Quality costume jewelry picked up the now defunct fine jewelry market. Costume jewelry flourished becoming an acceptable alternative to fine jewelry.
1980's Television Influences Jewelry
During the 1980s with the evolution of glitzy television soaps such as Dynasty and Dallas, costume jewelry once again became a “hot” fashion statement. With over 250 million viewers, it didn’t take long for costume jewelry to be reborn. Glitz and sparkle by day was not only acceptable, it became the norm. He studied at Parsons School of Design in New York, and upon graduation worked for designers such as Anne Klein, TSE, and Calvin Klein. Whether on the runway or on the red carpet, designer Narciso Rodriguez is in demand. He began is designer career in 1985 as a design assistant for fashion legend Anne Klein. Narciso has a gift for fitting a dress so that it is flattering to the shape of the woman's body. "It's so fantastic," Narciso says, "to create a frame for a woman's personality and her true beauty."

While working at Calvin Klein Narciso and Carolyn Bessette [later to become Carolyn Kennedy] became best friends. It was Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wedding dress design that brought Narciso front and center stage in the design world. Narciso’s wedding dress design for Carolyn was the buzz around the world. On September 21, 1996, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy stepped out of church on the arm of John F. Kennedy Jr. Women went gaga, literally drooling over Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s wedding dress.

Narciso was able to focus on his own line of clothing creating the perfect look for woman. Rather than designing dresses for matchsticks, Narciso’s designs accentuated the curves and bustline of the woman, creating what was called a real woman design. Narciso Latin background came through in his designs with each having a hint of Latin flare. BRIDAL GOWN

Bridal gowns come in a wide variety of styles, materials, colors, lengths and prices. You should order your gown at least four to six months before your wedding if your gown has to be ordered and then fitted.Different gown styles can help create a shorter, taller, heavier, or thinner look. Here are some tips:

A short, heavy figure: To look taller and slimmer, avoid knit fabrics. Use the princess or A-line style. Chiffon is the best fabric choice because it produces a floating effect and camouflages weight.
A short, thin figure: A shirtwaist or natural waist style with bouffant skirt will produce a taller, more rounded figure. Chiffon, velvet, lace and Schiffli net are probably the best fabric choices.
A tall, heavy figure: Princess or A-line are the best styles for slimming the figure; satin, chiffon and lace fabrics are recommended.

Another problem that can occur is late arrival of your gown. Get in writing when you can expect your gown and that your money will be refunded if it does not arrive in time. The best way to avoid these pitfalls is to deal with reputable boutiques. If your not sure which boutiques are good then ask others.

ALTERATIONS

Alterations may be necessary in order to make your gown fit perfectly. Alterations are not included in the price of the gown so make certain to get pricing before ordering. If your gown is going to need alterations get in writing that your gown will arrive 8-10 weeks prior to your wedding so there is plenty of time to have the alterations completed. If your weight tends to fluctuate then don’t alter your gown too far in advance.

HEADPIECE & VEIL

There are several choices available for the headpiece - tiera, Pillbox Banana Clip, Bow, Garden Hat, Headband, Juliet CapThere are several veil choices - Flyaway, Ballet, Fingertip, Blusher, Cathedral Length, Chapel Length, The headpiece should complement your gown, not overpower it. If you wish you can add a veil to your headpiece. There are many different veil styles and lengths available. Select a length which complements the length of your train.

GLOVES

If your wedding is on the formal side gloves add a nice touch with either short-sleeved, three-quarter length, or sleeveless gowns. There are a variety of glove styles and lengths. The type of glove you choose will depend on the length of your gown’s sleeves. Fingerless mitts are another option. These allow the groom to place your wedding ring on your finger without having to remove the glove. DO NOT wear gloves if your gown has long sleeves.

JEWELRY

You will need to decide what jewelry to wear on your wedding day. Brides look best with just a few pieces of simple jewelry. A string of pearls and earrings are very traditional and look very elegant. Your bridesmaids jewelry should complement the colors of their dresses.

STOCKINGS

Stockings should be selected with care, especially if the groom will be removing a garter from your leg at the reception.

GARTER

U2' s lead singer Bono isn’t content with being part of a top band. Fashion and Music – well I’m sure they can mix!
Bono was born Paul David Hewson in 1960 in Dublin Ireland. His stage name is Bono. Bono is the lead singer of US, he is also a songwriter. He married Ali Stewart in August 1982 and they have 5 children. Bono is also actively involved in as an activist and screenwriter.
Paul was a curious child who seemed to see the world from a different perspective from the rest of the world. When Paul was 15 he suffered the loss of his mother who he was very close to. In high school Paul found himself drawn to music and playing the guitar, spending a great deal of time involved with the school theater. The name Bono was the brain child of his close friend Guggi who took it from a Hearing Aide store located in Dublin. Bono Vox also means good voice in latin.
In 1976 a flyer was posted at his high school by Larry Mullen who was looking to form a band. Paul was jumped at the opportunity. The band became U2 which is now known around the globe.
Ali Hewson [nee Alison Stewart] grew up in the suburbs of north Dublin. She met Bono at high school. He tried to chat her up but she ignored him. Over the years he continued to pursue her. Their relationship moved very slowly because Alison wasn’t interested in becoming one of the Bono girls. After his mother died, Ali being the practical person she is, helped Bono with the essentials like food and clothing. Ali was 22 when they wed.
Ali Hewson appears to be open and down to earth in all respects. She appears honest and never puts on that she knows more about a topic than she does. She smiles often and appears to be a happy human being. She earned her degree in social science, politics, and sociology at the age of 33. She also became involved with Greenpeace.
It was having children that put Ali Hewson on the path of thinking more about the environment. She became concerned about what they would grow up to have, what would be left of the environment. Ali got involved with Greenpeace campaigning against the Sellafield nuclear power plant.
Over time, U2 also became actively involved in the protest against the Sellafield nuclear power plant. She had not direct responsibility for U2 becoming involved but because Bono and Ali share the same concerns, it was a natural outcome. Ali feels as a wealthy person she has a responsibility to do what she can to raise awareness on such issues.
So isn’t it natural that Bono and Ali have now evolved to another level of involvement with social politics. Bono and his wife Ali Hewson now have their fingers in the Fashion industry. But wait – this isn’t just any old fashion venture. This one has a new twist. Their goal is to involve developing countries in the producing of their clothing line, improving the quality of life for these people and their economic welfare.

They attempt to make “good” matches which are beneficial to Edun and the developing country. They believe that the developing countries and their people will benefit financially and emotionally. From Elizabeth Taylor to Meg Ryan to Dave Navarro to Usher – today earrings are a fashion statement for both men and women. The first pair of earrings has been dated back to 2500 BC. Only the wealth and those of royal lines could afford expensive jewelry back then.

There are all types of earrings – chandelier earrings, dangle earrings, hoop earrings, stud earrings, button earrings, and droplet earrings to name just a few. Earrings come in all types of materials and metals. Gold, silver, gemstones, plastics, bakelite, copper, diamonds, paste, pearls, faux stones, or glass. The list goes on and on. What ever your desires there is a pair of earrings out there waiting for you.

The oldest earrings ever unearthed by archaeologists were discovered in Iraq in the royal graves and date to about 2,500 BC. Back to 3000 BC there were two types of earrings: the hoop, and the more elaborate pendant. From 1559 B.C. to 1085 B in Egypt earplugs became very fashionable. These type of piercings and earrings are seen even on King Tutankhamen.

In the Dark Ages poverty prevailed and metal jewelry sharply declined although designs were preserved for later use. During the Roman Empire wealthy women used earrings to show off their rich status. By the 2nd century AD gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds, and aquamarines were used regularly.
During the Byzantine period which ran from330-1200 AD earrings took a back burner to more elaborate body ornamentation. In the Middle Ages earrings become almost non-existent because of the elaborate hair styles, and headdresses which were ever so popular.

During the 16th century in Italy high collars disappeared and hair was being worn up and away from the face, so earrings began to make a comeback. In other parts of the world such as England and France it would be another 100 years or so before the high collars disappeared. As time progressed the design of earrings became much more complex. Around 1660 the girandole earring made its appearance remaining very popular for the next couple of centuries. The girandole earrings were extremely large and heavy because of the metal content [gold or silver] and the amount of gems. Made of 3 pear shaped drops on a hook. The weight was known to cause elongated ear lobes.

In the latter part of the 18th century the pendeloque earrings became popular. They were longer than the girandole earrings but much lighter. They were the balance for the high hairdos and big wigs that were being worn.

During the early 1800, jewelers began to mount gemstones, on an open back claw setting. This allowed the light to pass through the gems enhancing their color and brilliance. By the 1850s, earrings had once again disappeared from the fashion scene. This was once again a result of changing hairstyles. The new styles that involved wearing the hair gathered in a knot at the back resulted in the ears being totally hidden. As well bonnets had arrived on the scene which also made wearing earrings rather difficult.
During the early 20th century screw backs were invented which meant women no longer had to pierce their ears. These became very popular. Some circles even began to believe piercing ones ears was rather barbaric.

After WWI shorter hairdos became very popular. Earrings were perfect for filling the space from short hair to shoulder and once again became a popular fashion statement.
During the 1920s art deco styles took hold, recognized by their straight or angled designs. Very long chandelier earrings were also quite popular during this time.

During the 1930s the clip on was invented. Because clip ons held the earring more snuggly than screw backs they became the number one choice for many years to come. Pierced ears faded into the background.
During the 1950s earrings were light and aerodynamic. By the 1960s earrings had become fun and innovative. Texture and color was very important. Prior to the 1960s earrings were dedicated to either evening wear or day wear with the evening wear earrings being more elegant. During the 1960s this all changed when the distinction between what was acceptable for evening or day faded away.

By the 1970s we had entered an “everything goes” style to earrings and pierced ears had made a comeback. Women were buying earrings in large quantities for every occasion. .

Today it’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t have pierced ears. Today men are as interested in earrings as women. Men often prefer studs or small hoops, they may wear one earring, two or more depending on the individual’s tastes. Children now get their ears pierced often at a very young age, even sometimes as babies. Women may have anywhere from one set of holes to piercings right up the ear. By the 1850s, earrings had once again disappeared from the fashion scene. This was once again a result of changing hairstyles. The new styles that involved wearing the hair gathered in a knot at the back resulted in the ears being totally hidden. As well bonnets had arrived on the scene which also made wearing earrings rather difficult.
During the early 20th century screw backs were invented which meant women no longer had to pierce their ears. These became very popular. Some circles even began to believe piercing ones ears was rather barbaric.
After WWI shorter hairdos became very popular. Earrings were perfect for filling the space from short hair to shoulder and once again became a popular fashion statement.
During the 1920s art deco styles took hold, recognized by their straight or angled designs. Very long chandelier earrings were also quite popular during this time.
During the 1930s the clip on was invented. Because clip ons held the earring more snuggly than screw backs they became the number one choice for many years to come. Pierced ears faded into the background.
During the 1950s earrings were light and aerodynamic. By the 1960s earrings had become fun and innovative. Texture and color was very important. Prior to the 1960s earrings were dedicated to either evening wear or day wear with the evening wear earrings being more elegant. During the 1960s this all changed when the distinction between what was acceptable for evening or day faded away.
By the 1970s we had entered an “everything goes” style to earrings and pierced ears had made a comeback. Women were buying earrings in large quantities for every occasion. .
Today it’s difficult to find someone who doesn’t have pierced ears. Today men are as interested in earrings as women. Men often prefer studs or small hoops, they may wear one earring, two or more depending on the individual’s tastes. Children now get their ears pierced often at a very young age, even sometimes as babies. Women may have anywhere from one set of holes to piercings right up the ear. The fashion of earrings has come a long way over the years and its here to stay! Whatever your style, there is certain to be a pair of earrings out there for you. Choosing A Concealer & Using It Correctly

For all of us there are times when we have a bit more to cover than our foundation will handles. A blemish, a dark spot, dark circles under the eyes. That’s when a good concealer comes in handy. Foundation is perfect for evening out skin tone and providing overall skin coverage. For those touch up spots a concealer is the answer.
There are a wide variety of concealers on the market. Some concealers are too pink, too dry, too hard to apply. Finding one that does the job for you may take some experimentation.
How to apply your concealer
1. Match your concealer to your skin tone, be sure it is no more than one shade lighter for the best results
2. For the best and most natural coverage apply your foundation first, then apply your concealer to the flaw areas and retouch foundation if needed.
3. Apply lightly,and add more as needed. Be sure it doesn’t look caked and and unnatural. Blend thouroughly.
4. If you have dry skin apply a light moisturizer prior to applying foundation and concealer.
5. Concealer is best applied with a small brush by dabbing. For around the eyes you can use your fingers.
Concealer Product Review
1. Cle de Peau Beaute is a stick concealer, which works terrific on dark circles. It’s perfect for removing dark circles and eliminates dark spots. A little dab goes a long way and it lasts all day. It doesn’t cake.
2. Dermablend Blemish Concealer is a stick concealer that works great on acne cover up. It doesn’t run or become oily and it doesn’t turn orange.
3. Max Factor Erace Concealer is a stick concealer that is both inexpensive and effective. It’s sheer enough for use around the eyes, yet substantial enough to hide imperfections on other parts of the face.
4. Crhistian Dior Anti Fatigue Concealer is a liquid concealer with a sponge applicator. Works great on eye circles, blemishes, and fades fine lines. It does not cake.
5. Iman Concealer is a liquid concealer with sponge applicator. It provides medium coverage. Works great on eye circles and small imperfections.
6. L’Oreal Visible Lift Line Minimizing Concealer is a tube cream concealer. Provides light to medium coverage and works well with yellow undertones. Doesn’t cake and lasts all day.
Wouldn’t life be grand if one product worked for all of us. However, that’s not the case. So although I try and review products I cannot tell you how they will work on your skin. Most reputable cosmetic companies will refund or exchange a product that you are not happy with. When you find the product that works, stick with it.

It's always tough finding the "perfect" foundation for your skin type, color, and texture. Some products are heavy,some don't cover so well, others don't blend well. We'll review a few of the products which we tried.
Tinted Moisturizers
Laura Mercier tint moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling fresh. Comes in 7 shades all very natural. It has an SPF of 20 and is fortified with age-defying antioxidants.
Elizabeth Arden tint moisturizer blends easily with enough coverage that you don't feel naked. It doesn't build up on dry patches. Demotologist tested. It has a SPF of 15
Hydramax tint moisturizer is a lightweight hydrating lotion balancing moisture and coverage with natural-colour tint. Extract of Butterfly Lavender helps boost hydration by stimulating the water-trapping proteins essential for skin's proper moisture balance. Comes in 2 shades.
Bobbi Brown tint moisturizer won the "Best New Foundation" award in Nov 2004 in Health Magazine. This formula is rich and luxurious so its perfect for anyone with extra dry skin. It blends easily and gives skin light coverage. Deeply moisturizes skin, to help reduce the look of fine lines. Dermatologist tested.
Avon tint moisturizer is great for younger skin, however it has a tendency to stick out like a sore thumb on dry skin. I tried applying it as a foundation with a make up sponge and as a moisturiser using my fingertips and both times my skin looked terrible. It has a nice feel and a pleasant floral scent but the overall look it gave me was not natural in any way, the dry spots on my face seemed to show badly. Perhaps better suited for pre 40's skin.
Liquid Foundations
Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk liquid foundation is lush yet feather light with a very sheer texture. It is exceptional at correcting discoloration, elimating redness and blotchiness. Comes in 14 shades.
L'Oreal True Match liquid foundation is a nice light weight and has terrific texture. No oils, fragrences or pore clogging materials. Contains vitamins B & E as well as glycerin to nourish the skin. Available in 24 colors.
Laura Mercier liquid foundation is water based yet exceptionally creamy with a nice smooth finish. It has great coverage for a non oil based product. It isn't greasy or drying and the color matches well. Application is best with a sponge, and you can get more or less coverage depending on how much you apply. Takes a few minutes to set.
Revlon Age Defying liquid foundation has great coverage and does not feel heavy. It does have a fragrance which does not go away. May hot be the best choice if your skin is at all oily. By mid day face may tend to feel oily and some experience "zit" outbreaks. It has an SPF of 30. Limited colors.
T Leclerc Hydrating Fluid liquid foundation is best applied with a sponge or fingers. Its super thin so you hardly know its there. Comes in 6 shades. It has an SPF of 8.
Mousse Foundation
Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse is my all time favourite foundation. It gives great coverage but you feel like you've got nothing on. It's lighweight and easy to apply. I find it's best applied with fingers. If your skins a little on the dry side apply a moisturizer and then the mousse and it says light weight. It lasts all day and I've never had a break out using this product. It's advertised as a revolutionary whipped formula and that describes its texture perfetly. Available in 10 shades.
Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Mousse is easy to apply and it never looks cakey or thick. Good coverage for such a sheer foundation. Great for dry skin. If you have oily or dry skin you may find yourself oily by mid day. I must say the smell can be a little harsh. If your at all sensative to smells have a whiff before buying. Dermatologist, clinically, allergy tested. Recommended for all skin types, except extra-oily.
Erno Laszlo Absolute Finish Finishing Mousse Foundation is water free, air whipped providing flawless coverage. It is good for almost all skin types except for very oily skin and those that have a sensitivity to salicylic acid. Its very light and coverage can be sheer to complete. Stays on all day. Its a water free air whipped. Contains Emu Oil and essential fatty acids for non greasy moisturizing. Antioxidants vitamin A, C, & E to defend against free radical damage. It has UVA and UVB protection, and it is Dermatologist tested.

History Of Costume Jewelry

There is virtually no difference between costume jewelry and antique jewelry. Costume Jewelry dates back to the 1930s. By the definition of antique that would also make it antique jewelry. However, most jewelry experts have come to agree that antique jewelry predates the 1930s.
Costume Jewelry came into being in the 1930s as a cheap disposable jewelry meant to be worn with a specific outfit, but not meant to be handed down through generations. It was intended to be fashionable for a short period of time, out date itself, and then be repurchased to fit with a new outfit purchase, or with a new fashion style. It became available in large quantities during the 30s.
Cheap jewelry also existed prior to the 1930s. Paste or glass jewelry as far back as the 1700s. The rich had their fine jewelry duplicated for a variety of reasons, using paste or glass stones. By the mid 1800s with the growth of the middle class there were now different levels of jewelry being manufactured using fine, semi-precious and base materials. Fine jewelry of gold, diamonds, fine gems such as emeralds and saphires continued to be made. Jewelry from rolled gold, which is a thin layer of gold attached to a base metal, entered the market for the middle class. This jewelry was often set with semi-precious gems such as amethyst, coral or pearls, and was much more affordable. And then there was jewelry that most anyone could afford, consisting of glass stones and base metals made to look like gold. All three types were intended to be passed down to future generations.
There are usually clues that can help one identify what era a piece of jewelry is from. Style, material, the type of piece. For example dress clips came in in the 1930s and were out of style by the 1950s. Jewelry reflects styles, designs, colors and stones of the era. For example from 1910 to 1930 silver was the favorite color for metal, so jewelry was found in platinum, white gold, silver or a base metal colored to look like silver. By World War II, gold was popular again but in short supply, since it was vital to the war effort. What gold was available was made into very thin sheets and usually bonded to silver (called vermeil) before being turned into jewelry. By the 1930s rhinestones popularity was ever increasing in Europe. It was not available to the Americans until the 1940s. As a result, many of the pieces from this period tend to feature lots of metal and a single stone or a small cluster of tiny rhinestones. .
Today is certainly not much different from past times. We still have fine jewelry, semi precious jewelry, and of course costume jewelry available to us. Costume jewelry can add the finishing touch and show your fashion sense. Costume Jewelry styles of past years are now becoming very fashionable and many are being reproduced. Even with costume jewelry there is a difference in quality. Many of the new pieces do not have the vibrance in the stones or the weight of the older pieces.
Antique and vintage costume jewelry are both fun to collect and fun to wear. No longer is costume jewelry simply "collectable." It is "in style, and " "fashionable," and a terrific conversation starter. Dress to impress!

Pearl Talk - What You Need To Know

Pearls never go out of style – they are always a classy and traditional wardrobe accessory that will never disappoint you. But this year they are a “front and center” fashion statement! So with more people in the market for pearls now is a good time for some “pearl talk.”

The pearl has always been a rather prim and proper piece of jewelry – classic and seeped in tradition. Well things they are a changing! The pearl is has had a very glamorous make over! Yes, the classic strand still exists as it always will. But we warned we are seeing some vary daring looks from the pearl this season. Extra long lengths, tasseled multi strands, pearls with semi precious stone accents, pearls on gold or silver chains. The pearl has been transformed into a fun and fashionable accessory.

So if you’re going to be in the market for pearls this year here is what you should know.
· The glow or radiance of a pearl is the most important quality. Avoid pearls that are chalky or dull as they will be weak and may crack or peal.
· The surface of the pearl should be blemish free – no bumps or cracks. Inspect under a bright light. Baroque pearls are the exception to this rule – their charm is in their irregularities.
· Pearls are measured in millimeters. The larger the pearl the higher the cost. A 6 mm pearl is going to be much less than a 12 mm pearl
· The least expensive pearls are the freshwaters which mainly come from China. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Average size is around 7 mm
· The best way to care for your pearls is simply to wear them. The natural skin oils keep them moisturized. Do not put them on until you are done with your cosmetics. This includes hair, facial, and perfume. The residues from these products will ruin your pearls. Do not wear your pearls in the water – chlorinated and salt water will damage them. Polish with a soft cloth and never use jewelry cleaning products on your pearls.

Quality pearls are not cheap but they will last a lifetime. Freshwater pearls are becoming very affordable. Not all of us will be in the market for “Real Pearls” and lucky us there are plenty of options. Swarovski makes a crystal pearl that is of the finest quality and quite difficult to tell from a true pearl for a fraction of the cost and they are available in a variety of colors. There is an endless supply of imitation pearl or costume jewelry pearls on the market. These are offered in a wide variety of styles and colors. Great fun at affordable prices.

So you ask what’s “In Style” this season? Well I’m glad you asked!
· Pearl rings get the green flag – from low settings to monster large solitaire pearls, they are all the rave. A pearl ring can go from romantic and simple to sleek and stunning.
· The Bib Necklace makes a very dramatic statement. A broad necklace that tapers towards the back just like a baby’s bib [thus the name]. They range from extremely wide to as narrow as a ½”. This style works great with a simple black dress or strapless neckline.
· The multi-strand necklace is ever so preppy. They range from 12” to 18” and pearls are usually small to medium. The object of these necklaces is for every pearl to be in perfect placement. Very versatile and fashionable.
· The opera length necklace simply never disappears from the fashion scene. They measure 36” or longer and they can be worn as a long single lean line, doubled up, tied in a knot, wherever the moment takes you. These long strands are terrific for dressing up a pair of jeans or semi casual look.
· The tassel necklace from the footloose and fancy free1920s has made a come back, and rightly so! Today tassels are often made from tiny seed pearls or irregular baroques. They range in length fro short at 16” to navel length at 36”. The tassel necklace swings and sways with your movement making it a must have for those night of dancing.
· This season for first time, we are seeing pearls mixed with colored gems such as amethyst, peridot, or topaz. They compliment each other nicely – pearls with their soft and subtle shades mixed with semi precious gems with their vibrant and bold color. Picture it – what a fashion statement!
· Pearls mixed with silver is also new this season. Long silver chain dangle earrings accented with pearls, or freshwater droplets set on silver.
· This season the pearl is all about the color. Pearls are available in many hues but this season the “hot spot” is “lavender” and the lavender family ranging from pale iris to plum.

If you already own a beautiful classic pearl necklace its very easy to transform it into something from this season. Try adding a group of charms or pendants, fastening a vintage brooch or clip[ on earring at the bottom. You could mix various lengths or sizes of pearls together or entwine a silver or gold chain. How about mixing your real pearls with your fake pearls? The options are as endless as your imagination.

I was flipping through this months Elle. There's some terrific style information in it! Looks like we've made it full circle to the 1970s. For some of us we'll get to relive some of our favourite fashions but there may be some 'yuck' in the group too.

Flirty cuts in pretty colors with ruffles and frills are in. Remember the vibrant balloon tops - they are back. As are the wool wrap tops and wool jackets. Super high heels have also made their way back into the picture. Your jewelry selections are wide open for mixing and matching. Big and bold will certainly fit the current trends.

Elle says that these items are runway hits: croppped sweaters in acrylic, cotton, or wool. Satin wrap tops ranging from long sleeves to no sleeves, and asymmetrical skirts. The skirts are definately fun and sexy - black is the hotest color, sequens are very popular, and beaded silk is definately in. Anne Klein – the past and the future

Fashion designer Anne Klein was born Hannah Golofski in New York City. She started as a sketcher on Seventh Avenue in 1938. In 1948 she launched Junior Sophisticates and in 1968 Anne Klein & Co was born.

Anne Klein was a fashion pioneer well known for understanding what women wanted. She was known for creating chic, sophisticated, wearable comfortable clothes that women would wear. She designed sophisticated sportswear for young women. She knew each woman’s wardrobe needed a blazer, trousers, and separates. Her designs were very popular within the USA. Her clothes were synonymous with American style and were relevant to the lives of the women she designed for.
The sportswear of today has its basis in Anne Klein, who defined what what women’s sportswear should be. In 1968 Anne Klein launched Anne Klein & Co. The company goal was to design and market sportwear separates that could be mixed and matched. She became an industry leader overnight.

Anne Klein & Co continued to grow and received numerous honors and award. Just at the height of her success Anne Klein died in early 1974 from breast cancer.
After years of financial difficulties and ownership changes Klein’s vision has once again become the label’s guiding light. The company was recently taken over by Jones Apprale Group with Mark Mendelson taking over as president. Mark recently stated “The purpose of Anne Klein New York collection is to make fabulous clothes.” The company says the changes are going to be gradual and subtle. The Anne Klein collection is now being designed by Michael Smaldone.

Nicole Kidman made the cover of "In Style" for the February edition. There's much coverage about her fashion sense. She's known to show for shoots dressed in tailored pants & blazer or shirt.when most would show up in their sweatpants. She has a reputation for being an immaculate dresser.
So what can us normal folk learn from her? Your look is an important part of who you are and it is important to make your fashion statement. Remember all the lectures as you grew up about "First Impressions?" Well I'll give you a short lecture again! First impressions can make or break you. They can move you forward or set you back a lifetime.
Now all that said doesn't mean you can't have fun casual looks. Casual looks can still be neat and tidy, still make an impression, and can still be polished and finished. In otherwords don't go out into public looking like a slob. A pair of kakis, jeans, and a tee-shirt are just fine - just make sure you look neat and tidy, don't forget your accesories and your jewelry all of which give your finished look.
So remember you are what you wear, at least in the eyes of others. So always be ready to make your fashion statement!

Don't Be a Victim of Fashion

Worried about that new print top matching with your fave skirt? Can't decide which shoes or boots are best for your dress? It's very easy to look fashionable without going overboard on trends.
1. Fist you need to decide if your wasting too much on money on the current fashion trend or fad. Do this by having a look at the last 10 items you bought.
2. Are they functional beyond one season? If over half will only get one seasons wear then you may be wasting some money
3. Check your wardrobe. Is 1/4 of your wardrobe "one season only?" 1/2? You make the detemening factor about what's too much expendable wardrobe. Then decide if your buying to much of the current fashion trend.
5. Don't combine more than two different fads or trends at one time.
6. Don't feel like you "must" have the designer piece. Ya a couple of Gucci or Dior pieces are nice but you can often find no name pieces for alot less money. For a real stunning look mix your designer pieces with your non designer items.
7. Don't buy an item because it has a designer name on it. Buy the item because you love it and would buy it even it had the Walmart brand name on it. Buy for the love of the garmet not for the importance of the designer.
8. Have plenty of basics in your jewelry - silver, gold, pearls can all be dressed up or down. They travel through any fashion high and give you years of wear. Staple colors such as black, navy, white, or cream are also good.
9. You can buy relatively cheap costume jewelry so utilize this avenue to stay in fashion. For example this season hosts wood jewelry. Pick up some deals and when its out of fashion next year you'll only be out a few dollars.
10. It's okay to have shoes that are "in style" in your wardrobe but don't go crazy. And remember to keep the staple shoes that go from season to season without so much as a hickup. If stilletos are in this year then buy a pair - your favorite pair that you can wear with a huge part of your wardrobe. IF the price is right buy two pair. But "don't" fill your closet with them.
11. I recommend 1/2 your wardrobe consist of "basics" in your normal wardrobe color choices. Make sure you have plenty of black, gray, white, or cream. You can mix and match most any print that comes into fad with these basics. Always have one reliable blazer that goes from one style to another. By keeping 1/2 your wardrobe essentials you can comfortably spend to have fun with the other 1/2 for the current fashions.

Making your fashion statement is important! Just don't get carried away. It can be done within a reasonable budget. And you'll look great!

For those of you that have been following the publicity on the Trump wedding this is probably all old hat. For those of you that haven't you should - not only has it got some great ideas, food for thought, its also very entertaining. Okay yes way to outlandish and yes did I forget way to expensive for m0st of us but it doesn't take much to tame an idea down or replicate it at a lower price. And the bride to be's philosphy leaves one thinking.......

It's amazing how much money Trump has made from the spin off of their wedding. How about Donald Trump The Fragrance For Men, featured in this months Vogue - here we have smiling Donald and wife to be covering two pages for this new fragrance. Perhaps some insight into how he got to be a billionaire is to be found here. He'll never spend what he's got but he's quick to grab another opportunity to make more. And then we have to wonder as consumers why we are so quick to jump on the band wagon and buy this fragrance - better than others? doubtful. More costly? Perhaps. We can only guess its all in the name of the American dream to be like Mr Trump - Wealthy.

Then there's the offer from NBC to broadcast their wedding live in prime time. 3 hours in prime time equates to $25 million in advertising. Although they did decline - it was actually open for discussion for some time. How about all the articles appearing in top magazines. This month Vogue is featuring Exclusive Donald Trump's New Bride. Bottom line is there special day is quickly arriving and they are going to make a truck load of money off of it. Now thats enterprising!

Now lets meet the next Mrs Trump - she's 34 years old and Slovenian and her name is Melania Knauss. Her Sloveninan accent, beauty, sweetness, and firmness turn Trump to rubber just like Doris Day turned Jimmy Stuart to rubber. Her focus is on her love for her husband to be Donald Trump. From the moment Donald proposed to Melania with a $1.5 million dollar ring - yes that's $1.5 million - she insisted the wedding was to be a verson of white and gold and diamonds.

Now here's where we can all learn - Melania had millions at her disposal to plan her wedding. But where was her focus? On her love for her future husband. Yes she has spent more on her dress and outfits then most of us will see our lifetime but she could have spent more! She was more interested in looking like herself, being herself, and staying grounded with what the day is really about "Their Love". When choosing her wedding dress she wanted function, comfort, and beauty. She turned down one dress that she really liked because she could not walk comfortably in it. The message here is spending outlandish amounts of money on your gown is not going to make your day more special or less special. What's important is to find a gown in the price range you've decided on and to find that special gown that makes you feel on top of the world, like it was made for you. You'll know when you find it. You don't have to wear "traditional white", heck Melania was even looking at a black gown. There is no right or wrong. What is "right" for you and your loved ones special day is what's important.

Melania hand designed her invitations and had them printed at Tiffany's. Nice personal touch for a lady that could have just had them done at a printers. But again this is their special day and she wants to stay connected. You too can design your invitations and thank you notes, you can even buy kits to print them on your laser printer.

Traditions - where is it written you must follow tradition. It's your day! Make it just that - personal and meaningful. Melania broke tradition by deciding not to carry a bouquet of flowers. She is instead going to carry a rosery. At a recent bridal show I saw a Parosal made of Orchids rather than a bouquet of flowers - it was spectacular. What do you want? Decide and then go with it. This is your day - make the most of it.

Who Says What Your Fashion Statement Is

Who exactly should say what your Fashion Statement is? You of course! Each of us has our own likes, dislikes comfort zones, body shape & size, and life styles. Yes its wonderful to pick up the magazine that shows this years top stars like Sarah, Jessica, Nicole, and Gwen but hey we aren't them right.

Perhaps my comfort zone is a loose fit, maybe yours is a very tailored or tight fit. I like turtle necks, you've got cleavage and like to show it. Maybe your a rancher and functional is important, or an office executive where a professional look is critical. Tweeds in and you hate tweed, then don't buy tweed. Hot colors are in but your skin is washed out, then stick to the colors that look good on you but perhaps dress them up with a little color. Low rise pants are in but they aren't attractive on you, then don't buy them.

It's all wonderful and dandy for the fashion world to tell us what is in, what we should wear. But the bottom line is clothes that we buy and hang in the closet never to be warn are a waste of our money. Don't feel pressured to stay with the trends. Trends come and go. If you stick with your basics and then add a piece here and there that fits the current fashions you'll be much better off.

So pick up the popular fashion magazines like Vogue, Style, or Elle. Have a flip through. Then take what you like and use it and toss the rest away. What really matters is that you feel "good" in the look you present. When you feel good about how you look your confidence level jumps, your happier, and your positive energy flows around you.

If a pair of blue jeans with a tank top and big bold earrings is your thing then that's your fashion statement. If you like long skirts, heels, and gold jewelry then that's your fashion statement. Don't let anyone or anybody change you from who you are. Because you are your fashion statement.

Now that's not to say we can't all take a lesson or so, get the creative juices flowing, or freshen our look. The magazines are terrific ways to do just that. There are plenty of great web sites that can also be very helpful.

Don't forget accesories can spice up any outfit. Denim can be very classy with the right shoes and jewelry. Your black dress can become quite informal and fun with the right jewelry or belt. Change the entire look of an outfit with your accesories. Utilize all your wardrobe by mixing and matching pieces, jewelry, shoes, and other accesories. The more jewelry you have the more looks you can create.

You are your fashion statement. Say what you want, say it how you want, wear it how you want! If your comfortable in your look your going to show your confidence. Be you!
